20-21 de octubre

¡Hola Familias!

It was a short week this week, but we had a LOT going on! I am so proud of my students for all they have learned so far in Kindergarten! I also enjoyed meeting with more parents at Parent-Teacher Conferences. There is a lot to celebrate together!

Here is an update on what we've been doing this week:

Reading / Lectura: We have started getting ready for literacy centers! This week we learned how to sort and choose our own books from the classroom library. We are also learning how we can read a familiar text several times to think about how the characters feel and what is happening in the story. We also got to watch the fifth grade students perform a reader's theater story of Anansi, the clever spider.

Writing / Escritura: This week we continued learning vocabulary for el cuerpo and worked on adding more words and labels to our work. The kids are doing a great job stretching out their words to write the sounds they hear!

Math / Matemáticas: In math we have been doing some new centers to practice recognizing numbers, adding +1, and solving simple addition and subtraction problems. Our fifth grade friends also came and helped us learn our new centers!

Bible / Biblia: We continued learning about Moisés this week. We learned about how God spoke to Moisés through the burning bush and told him to return to Egipto, where he was to confront Faraón asking him to deliver God's people. Even though we are imperfect and may feel unprepared, God can still use us as part of His story!

Social Studies / Estudios Sociales: We learned about different animals and the ways that they communicate using the five senses.

Barn Chores Next Week

I would love to have two parent helpers next week on Tuesday morning (around 8:30-10:00) when our class has barn chores. Most likely you would be helping monitor a group of students outside as we rotate through a few different activities. Let me know--gracias!

Immersion Tip of the Week

Make sure you expose your child to a lot of rich vocabulary in English (and in Spanish, too, if you speak the language!). You can do this by reading, talking about what you see in books, describing pictures, talking about what you see in the supermarket--pretty much any activity you do! This will help your child continue to make connections between languages, as well as strengthen verbal skills.

Reading Tip of the Week

Your child has been bringing home books from the library--usually one in English and one in Spanish (or bilingual). If you don't speak Spanish, help your child look for words or syllables that he/she knows! Don't forget to look at the pictures and talk about what you think is happening in the story!

13-17 de octubre

Hola Familias!

What a great week! The kids were full of energy, and we had tons of fun together! We had some amazing weather, played outside, and did lots of great learning. I also thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity I had to sit down with many of you and celebrate your child yesterday. I look forward to the rest of our conferences next week on Monday evening!

Here is more information about our week:

Reading / Lectura: This week we jumped into the building block for Spanish reading--las sílabas (syllables)! In Spanish, words are comprised of sílabas, which are usually made up of a consonant and a vowel together (e.g. ma-má). This week we learned las sílabas con M: ma, me, mi, mo, mu. Your child might be noticing lots of letters everywhere--ask about the M syllables as well!

Writing / Escritura: We have been using the vocabulary from el cuerpo to work on adding labels to our work. This week we focused on adding more details to our drawings, adding el punto (a period) at the end of each sentence, and using espacios (spaces) between each word.

Math / Matemáticas: We are learning to identify and sequence numbers from 1-10 as well as compare them using the terms mayor (greater) and menor (less). We've also been working on recognizing 5-groups in numbers from 6-10 (example: 6 = 5+1).

Bible / Biblia: This week we finished up the story of José, learning how he interpreted los sueños de Faraón (Pharaoh's dreams) and how he became an important figure in Egypt. Most importantly, José forgave his brothers when they came to him asking for food. Just as he chose to forgive, we can do the same--and we can receive Jesus' forgiveness for our sins! We also started learning about Moisés.

Science / Ciencias: This week we talked about las plantas and what they need to grow. The seeds we planted in our greenhouse are starting to grow! We also had a great time cutting open calabazas (pumpkins) and exploring them using our five senses!

Immersion Tip of the Week

Immersion in a second language can be overwhelming, and these kids are champs! Let them know what a great job they are doing. I've told my own kids how I didn't know any Spanish at all when I was their age, and their dad didn't know English. Learning another language breaks down so many barriers, and it is an amazing gift for your child! Thank you for allowing me to be part of this language journey.

Reading Tip of the Week

There are many, many activities you can do to build your child's reading skills, but the most important thing is that you ENJOY it! Take time this weekend to read with your child. If it's not part of your daily routine, I encourage you to find a time to do so. Reading  20 minutes a day yields amazing results (see infographic at right!).

6 - 10 de octubre

¡Hola Familias!

We have had a great week! Some of our highlights were our fiesta de letras, or letter party, and our field trip to the Farmer's Market on Wednesday, as well as a special activity with our buddy class on Thursday (read more below!).

Here is more information about our week...

Reading / Lectura: This week we finished the whole alphabet! We wrapped up with the digraphs ll and rr, and then we started practicing different skills we will use when we begin with our literacy centers. We have also been working on "reading" books by looking at pictures and using the vocabulary that we already know.

Writing / Escritura: We are starting a new vocabulary unit on el cuerpo, or the body. We have been practicing drawing our bodies and adding rótulos, or labels, showing different parts. We did a fun activity drawing personas on white boards together!

Math / Matemáticas: This week we have focused on the numbers 1-10: putting them in order, comparing them, recognizing the numbers, and writing them. We also practiced comparing shapes like círculos, cuadrados, y rectángulos, and comparing shapes with straight lines (líneas rectas) and curved lines (curvas).

Bible / Biblia: We have started learning about José, or Joseph. We learned about how José received a special gift from his father Jacob and how he had dreams that made his brothers jealous--celosos. We are learning how God had a plan for José even through difficult times, like when his brothers sold him into slavery and when he ended up in jail (la cárcel). Just like José, God is always with us--even when we feel alone or scared.

Science / Ciencias: We did more exploring of los cinco sentidos (the five senses) at the

Farmer's Market on Wednesday. We also did a special activity with our buddy class where we learned about indigenous peoples of Michigan through our five senses. We did some leaf rubbings to observe nature with los ojos, built small casitas to provide shelter with las manos, and used several senses to make pretend
medicina out of leaves, berries, and other natural elements.

Immersion Tip of the Week

I am gradually starting to require more and more Spanish to be spoken in the classroom. Remind your child that he/she already has A LOT of vocabulary, even though sometimes he/she won't know the exact word to use. Ask your child how to describe an object in Spanish, using colors, shapes, numbers, and adjectives like big/small, hot/cold, hard/soft, fast/slow, etc. I think you will be impressed!

Reading Tip of the Week

When you read with your child, encourage your child to look for words, vowels, sounds, and/or syllables that he/she knows. As they begin learning to read, the students will become much more aware of print. Call their attention to features of the text in a fun, non-pressured way as you enjoy a book together.
