Community Connections

Community Connections / Conexiones en la Comunidad

As your child embarks on this amazing language-learning journey, why not participate with him/her in some cultural activities outside of the classroom? On this page, I hope to provide you with some ideas of ways you can connect with the Hispanic/Latino community here in Holland (and practice some Spanish, too!).

Spanish Church Services

Of course, it is important to have a "home" church and to attend regularly, but you are always welcome and encouraged to visit a Spanish-speaking church in your area! It is powerful to observe others, and participate ourselves, in worshiping our God in a different language. There are many local Spanish-speaking services. My family attends Engedi Español, and there are other Spanish churches in Holland such as Iglesia Vida and La Roca. Come visit and make connections with the community!

¡A Comer!

Who doesn't like to eat? One of my favorite ways to experience new cultures is through food. Here is a short list of *some* of the many Hispanic restaurants and grocery stores in the Holland area:

-El Huarache (right across from Rose Park! We love their nachos with chorizo!)
-Supermercado La Excelencia (on River St close to school. Meat market, piñatas, and other authentic products.)
-Taqueria Arandas (right by the bridge on River St, I have honestly never been there but I have friends who love it!)
-La Consentida Supermarket (our go-to grocery store; we go there at least once a week! Try their barbacoa tacos on Saturdays and Sundays!)
-Mi Favorita Grocery (sells lots of great products as well as made-to-order tacos and plates)
-Ramirez Bakery (sells authentic Mexican sweet bread as well as other treats! ¡Delicioso!)
-Colin's Bakery (a hidden gem that we visit a bit too often! You'll love the pan dulce here!)
-La Michoacana (also very close to school--try some Mexican snacks, paletas (frozen fruit bars), ice cream, fresas con crema (strawberries and cream), or elote (corn in a cup)! I'm getting hungry just thinking about it!)
