6-10 de diciembre

¡Hola Familias!

I can't believe we're almost to Christmas break! We sure can feel the anticipation building in our classroom. Every day we search for a mischievous duende (elf) who likes to hide in our classroom. We've also been working really hard to speak Spanish to color in our pino de español

Here's what we've been up to this week...

Reading / Lectura: We studied some tricky syllables this week: za, zo, zu (think English "s" sound) AND ce, ci (also "s" sound; think of words like "circle" in English). It can be a confusing concept, but the kids have done a great job reading the syllables! We've also been working hard in our guided reading groups on different reading strategies.

Writing / Escritura: This week we started looking at pattern books. The students wrote 2 books following patterns this week, titled Te Amo (I love you) and Yo Veo (I see). They were so proud of their work, and we enjoyed reading our books to one another!

Math / Matemáticas: We've been exploring teen numbers this week and noticing the 10 inside of each number. We've also been working on finding the parts of different numbers (e.g. 4=2+2 or 3+1) and solving problems with sumas y restas. I encourage you to explore this concept at home with your child!

Bible / Biblia
: We are taking a break from the Old Testament to look at the Christmas story! This week we learned about how the ángel Gabriel visited María to tell her that she was going to have a baby. We also learned about the trip to Belén and the visit from los pastores (the shepherds).

Social Studies / Estudios Sociales: We concluded our Christmas around the World project this week, and we also got to learn about Christmas in many other countries by visiting other classroom displays! We also had the chance to sample Mexican ponche de frutas (a traditional fruit drink) and buñuelos (fried tortillas with cinnamon and sugar on top). ¡Delicioso!

SI Christmas Concert

It's today! Check your email around 6:00 for the link. We can't wait to share our hard work with you!

Class Christmas Party

We will have a class Christmas party on Friday, December 18th in the afternoon. We're bummed that we can't invite families to join us, but we'd love it if you could make our party special by sending something in! Here is a signup with details.

We will also have a class gift exchange at our party. Each boy will bring in a $5 wrapped present for a boy, labeled "Para: un amigo, De: (your child's name)". Each girl will bring in a $5 wrapped present for a girl, labeled "Para: una amiga, De: (your child's name)". Please no guns or weapons! ;)

The Show Must Go On

If you have had a child here at Rose Park for first grade, you likely remember the beauty and excitement of the annual first grade Christmas program as well as the Christmas Blessing experience. If your child is yet looking forward to first grade, they're in for a transformational experience! As with ALL of our learning plans for our students this year, we want to design experiences that are safe and meet the return-to-learn safety measures but also instill just as much, if not more, invigoration and JOY in the learning process. Truth be told, this stretch of creativity has been an exciting endeavor for our staff together! Our first grade Christmas program and blessing experience cannot look like it has in the past with rows of parents and grandparents seated in the gym, but that doesn't have to stop us! Guess what! The Show Must Go On! ....outside in the parking lot! We're moving our risers outside to hold our singing shepherds and angels! A local radio station and graciously agreed to transmit our caroling fleet of angels and shepherds voices right into the listening car radios of parents and grandparents watching from the parking lot! Shoot! This year they might even sing along from inside their car! You are welcome to share the experience and tune into the Christmas joy on December 16 at 9:30 on WHTC.

Have a great weekend!

30 de noviembre - 4 de diciembre

 ¡Hola Familias!

There's no question about it--La Navidad is quickly approaching! We've been having lots of fun in class building anticipation through crafts, stories, and songs, all en español! It's exciting to hear the kids growing in their confidence with the language as we play, grow, and learn. What a blessing it is to be together!

Here's what we've been learning this week...

Reading / Lectura: This week we practiced syllables with da, de, di, do, du. We've bene working on putting syllables together to read new words. We've also been reading in small groups together to practice our reading strategies!

Writing / Escritura: We are wrapping up our unit on la ropa, or clothing. We've learned different songs and enjoy playing guessing games to practice this vocabulary. As we incorporate clothing words into our writing, we've also practiced labeling our work and adding more detail.

Math / Matemáticas: This week we've been practicing patterns, shapes, and number stories. Next week we'll be diving into lots of sumas, or addition problems!

Bible / Biblia
: We have been learning about el Rey David and how he had a heart for God. We spent time in los salmos (the Psalms) reading David's words praising God, and learned about how he became the king of Israel. Next up, we'll take a break from the Old Testament and move to the story of the birth of Jesus!

Social Studies / Estudios Sociales: We've been learning so much about la Navidad en Mexico! This week we had a blast making our own piñatas! The kids are very eager to fill them with candy and break them open, but for now they will be on display in our hallway for our Christmas Around the World project. ;)

SI Christmas Concert: It's coming up! The kids did a great job recording this week, and we can't wait until Friday, December 11th at 6pm to watch the show! Details (and some surprise treats!) to come!

Christmas Craft Reminder!

If you have not sent in your vase yet, please do so BY MONDAY! We need it to prepare a Christmas centerpiece that you can enjoy in your home this holiday season.

Reminder: Water Bottles

Please make sure your child brings a water bottle to school every day. Our classroom water fountain is currently off-limits, and I'm running very low on cups to give out to students who forget their waters at home. ¡Muchas gracias!

Have a wonderful weekend! Enjoy lots of photos from our fun week below.
