12-16 de septiembre

¡Hola Familias!

We have had a great week in kindergarten! The kids have been doing a great job getting used to our routines, using more Spanish phrases, and working together in small groups! This week we also enjoyed our first K-2 praise and worship Chapel on Wednesday, and today we started our work for our Hispanic Heritage Month celebration with the other immersion classes. I am so proud of the kids for all of their hard work!

Here are more details about our week and what we've been learning...

Reading / Lectura: We are continuing to work our way through el alfabeto! This week we learned the letters J, K, L, M, and N. We have also been focusing on the vowel O and studying the difference between el and la (Spanish for "the", depending on whether the word is masculine or feminine). Finally, in our Reader's Workshop time, we are learning how to look at books with partners and to act out what we read.

Writing / Escritura: This week we continued to use words from la familia in our writing. We have been working on adding more to our work, such as adding details or different colors to our drawings. We are also starting to practice the very important concept of writing simple words based on the sounds we hear. This lesson will continue into next week!

Math / Matemáticas: We are diving into our new math books and manipulatives! This week we learned how to use counting chips (fichas) to represent numbers, put numbers in order, and to see different parts of a number. I will send home some resources next week to help you practice this at home as well.

Bible / Biblia: This week we learned the story of Adán y Eva, or Adam and Eve. Most kids are familiar with this story and can make connections with what they have learned at home or in church. My favorite part of the story is connecting it to our need for a Savior, who is awaited throughout the entire Old Testament!

Science / Ciencias: We continued learning about los cinco sentidos (the five senses) this week as we studied los oídos (ears). We played a few "guess that sound" games as well as made palos de lluvia, or rain sticks. The kids loved this project!

Immersion Tip of the Week

Singing is a powerful way to learn a language! I bet you have probably heard your child singing songs in Spanish at home (we do a lot of that!). Ask your child if he/she remembers the song for "can you open this please?", the song for getting in line ("silencio"), or the song for washing their hands ("el agua y el jabón").

*If you haven't seen it already, check out our Spanish Language Resources page with info about songs that I use a lot in class, in case you're interested in downloading them and playing them at home...on repeat...over...and...over. :)

Reading Tip of the Week

Play a game with your child by segmenting words. Try something like this: "Base - ball. What does that say?" (baseball) Continue with compound words, such as snowman, football, bookcase, etc. Then, break down words into syllables, for example: "ta - ble". Finally, you can do sounds in the words, like "c - a - t". You can do this while running errands together, while driving somewhere in the car, while getting ready for bed, or really anytime!

Field Trip MONDAY to Robinette's Apple Orchard / Maestra Absent

We will be taking our first field trip this coming Monday, September 19th, to Robinette's Apple Orchard, where we will explore the five senses and pick apples! Unfortunately, I will be unable to attend the field trip due to a funeral; however, Mrs. Bos and Mrs. Brouwer will be helping facilitate the trip along with four parent volunteers. I am very sad to be missing such a fun time! I will be at school first thing on Monday morning to greet the kids and get them ready. When they return to school around lunchtime, they will have a substitute teacher for the rest of the day.

Kindergarten Family Night!

Mrs. Bos, Mrs. Brouwer, and I are very excited to announce our first Kindergarten Family Night! Come enjoy a hayride and corn maze with other Kindergarten families from Rose Park! Meet us at Crane Orchards (6054 124th Ave, Fennville, MI 49408) on Thursday evening, October 6th at 5:45pm. The price will be $8 per person, which includes both hayride and corn maze.

We can't wait to see you there! Please fill out this Google form so we can get an estimated head count for the evening.

Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration

We still have a few slots available to help out for our Hispanic Heritage Celebration, which will take place the morning of September 29th. Check out the signup here!

Walkathon Forms

Our Walkathon will be the afternoon of September 28th! If your child has his/her Walkathon forms (in the brown envelope), please return to school this coming week.

I believe that's all for now! I hope you have a wonderful weekend and look forward to seeing your child next week! Enjoy more pictures from our week below.
