¡Hola Familias!

GOZO--JOY--was definitely the word of the day today! The kids had a blast at my house this morning for breakfast--we enjoyed breakfast tacos, conchas (sweet bread), fruit, and lots of fun and games too. Thank you to all of my parent volunteers and helpers who sent in items to make this morning a success!

This week we also had a great opportunity to learn about the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. We watched a video of Dr. Seuss's book The Sneeches (read in Spanish of course) that talked about two groups of creatures that treated each other differently because of what they looked like. This led into a wonderful response where the kids were able to brainstorm and share what kind of sueño (dream) they can share with the world--to help others, to share Jesus' love, to treat everyone equally. As followers of Christ, this is even more important! It was a privilege for me to share this lesson with the kids.

Here is more about our busy week:

Reading / Lectura: We have been learning about the letter z as well as the soft c (/s/) sound: the za, ce, ci, zo, zu (all of these syllables sound the same as the syllables with "s"). We've also been practicing using strategies to read unknown words, such as looking at the picture and reading words syllable by syllable.

Writing / Escritura: Before Christmas break, we were writing pattern books with titles such as Yo Veo (I see) or Me Gusta (I like). Now, we are taking what we have learned to create our own pattern books! It is fun to see the kids generate their own ideas in books.

Math / Matemáticas: We have been working on forming teen numbers by using a ten-group and ones. We've also been strengthening our skills at seeing parts of numbers and completing sumas y restas (addition and subtraction problems).

Bible / Biblia: This week we learned about God's faithfulness to the Israelites despite their tendency to stray from Him. We learned how they created a golden calf when Moisés was on the mountain, and how they were afraid to enter la Tierra prometida (the promised land). Nevertheless, God was always faithful to the Israelites, just like He is with us today!

Social Studies / Estudios Sociales: As I mentioned above, we learned about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his life and legacy. I encourage and challenge you to spend time as a family over this long weekend learning about Dr. King's work and finding ways to show Christ's love to others--even those who may be different from us.

Immersion Tip of the Week

We have been practicing simple addition and subtraction problems in math (mostly with numbers 1-5 and occasionally 1-10). This skill should easily transfer over into English. For fun, use a white board and write out a few problems. Ask your child how to do them--in either English or Spanish!

Reading Tip of the Week
When you are reading to your child this week, spice things up by reading with lots of expression. We have talked about some punctuation marks like puntos (.), signos de exclamación (!), signos de interrogación (?) and comas (,), so exaggerate them when you see them--or ask your child, "What does this symbol mean?"

That's all for now! Have a wonderful long weekend and I look forward to seeing your child back at school on Tuesday!
