24-28 de abril

¡Hola Familias!

We had a great week, filled with tons of fun activities and experiences! Here are some of the highlights...

-On Monday morning we went to our invernadero (greenhouse) to help Maestra Cantú's class release 1,500 mariquitas (ladybugs)! Hopefully they will help our plants in their fight against an aphid invasion. Lots of great learning went on with this experience!

-On Tuesday afternoon we took a trip to Riley Trails where we explored animal habitats, observed the natural world around us, and built shelters and brainstormed ideas to find food and water for our Wilderness Survival Challenge. We even had a few minutes of sunshine, after a crazy day of spring snow!

-On Wednesday, we visited the Supermercado & Taquería Azteca, where we enjoyed some delicious tacos, tostadas, quesadillas, arroz, frijoles, and aguas frescas! We also went on a scavenger hunt  to look for some typical products sold in Hispanic grocery stores. I encourage you to visit the store and/or restaurant again with your family and have your child explain a little about what we learned!

-On Thursday, we celebrated el Dia del Niño, or Children's Day. This holiday is celebrated widely throughout Latin America and in other countries as well. Our Spanish Immersion classes had a great time playing games, breaking piñatas, eating raspas (snow cones) with traditional flavors, and playing lotería together in small groups. In addition to the photos below, you can find tons of photos from this event here.

We have also been doing lots of learning in the classroom! Here is a quick update:

Reading / Lectura: This week we learned the syllables ga, gue, gui, go, gu. We have also been working on using reading strategies with nonfiction books.

Writing / Escritura: We finished up the research portion of our nonfiction animal books, looking at pictures and taking notes on where animals live, what they eat, and what they look like.

Math / Matemáticas: We continue to work on counting from 1-100, solve number stories, and identify the parts of 10.

Biblia / Bible: We have been learning Jesus' milagros y parábolas. This week we learned the parable of the fishermen who separated their fish, as well as the miracle of Jesus feeding the 5,000.

Critter Barn Field Trip: Wednesday, May 3rd

We will be heading to the Critter Barn this Wednesday, May 3rd from 9:00-2:30. Kids will need to bring lunches from home--preferably in a LABELED brown bag, so everything can be thrown away (it's just easier than carting around all the lunch boxes!). Each parent chaperone will need to pay $8. I will collect $8 cash from you the morning of the field trip, if not earlier.

That's all for now! Have a wonderful weekend and I look forward to seeing your child back at school on Monday! Enjoy LOTS of photos below...
