12-16 de noviembre

¡Buenas tardes a todos!

Noviembre is sure flying by! Just a couple of weeks ago we enjoyed the beautiful foliage, and now it's a winter wonderland! We have enjoyed a great week together in kindergarten. Here are some of the highlights:

Our Week

Bible
We have continued our story of Moisés in Bible this week. We completed a maze to track his journey to Egipto with his hermano, Aarón. Then, we learned how Faraón's heart was hardened when Moisés asked him to free God's people. We have been learning about las 10 plagas, or the 10 plagues, that God sent to Egipto. It has been fun to use this story to teach the kids some new and interesting vocabulary! Most of all, we remember that God is faithful to His people and has a plan for them.

Reading

This week, we practiced the syllables ta, te, ti, to, tu. I've been so excited to see the students gain confidence in their syllable reading and start to read more fluently. Please keep reading at home using the books in your child's book bags, and don't forget to send them to school so we can add more books!

Writing
This week, we have been practicing using good habits that writers have. Our focus was on using spaces between words, which makes our writing easier to read! We also practiced adding labels to our drawings, using a sound chart to write words, and writing a piece based on a pattern book that we read as a class.

Math
In math, we have been practicing the pattern of más uno (+1). We used manipulatives to model numbers from 1-10 to notice this pattern, then practiced a song about ladybugs on a leaf to reinforce the concept. Also, we have looked at the attributes of triángulos and how they are different from the other shapes we have seen.

Science
Building on our unit of force and motion, this week we added the words empujar (push) and jalar (pull). We went outside on the playground to demonstrate these words, as well as the preposition words that we learned last week. It was a lot of fun to practice pushing and pulling on the swings!

Coding
Once or twice a week, our class will also have a chance to explore the ideas behind coding. We first talked about sequencing and how certain things (e.g. brushing your teeth, making a sandwich) need to go in a certain order. Then, the students had a chance to explore the app Tynker (which has a Spanish version), in which they use simple codes to control the movements of a character. They LOVED this activity! We will keep building on these skills in the coming weeks.

Immersion Tip of the Week
I challenge you to find a time or a way for your child to hear Spanish outside of school this week! Could you play music in Spanish at home? Get together with someone who speaks Spanish? Attend a Spanish-speaking church service? Visit a place where Spanish might be spoken (e.g. a restaurant, a grocery store, etc.)? Help your child remember that it's not only a language, it's a part of life!

Reading Tip of the Week
Go on a "scavenger hunt" for letters and sounds as you drive somewhere in your car. Ask your child, "Can you find the letter/sound ___?" Many sounds in Spanish are the same (or similar to) those in English, but others are different. Ask your child to teach you some letter names or sounds in Spanish!
