29 de abril-3 de mayo

¡Hola Familias!

What a whirlwind week! As Tulip Time approaches and the end of the school year is in sight, I can't believe how much these kids have grown and accomplished. I am so proud of them for their growth--in their friendships, in the Spanish language, in their reading and math, and so much more!

Here are some highlights from this past week at school. Be sure to read some important announcements and upcoming events below!

*Last Friday, we had a great noche de película at my house! The kids enjoyed the food, the movie Río, and, of course, playing together.

*What an amazing second week of swimming lessons! I'm so glad so many parents made it out to see how much their child has learned. Be sure to congratulate your child for a great 2 weeks of swimming.

*We celebrated El Día del Niño (Children's Day) on Tuesday. The kids dressed up in traditional costumes and gave a short presentation in many different classrooms about this day in many different Spanish-speaking countries. Afterwards, we all got to hit a piñata! (Eventually the adults had to take a whack, because it was pretty indestructible!)

*We tried some new foods from different countries--limbes (flavored frozen treats) from Puerto Rico and pastel de tres leches (three-milk cake) from Mexico! ¡Qué delicioso!

*We are currently working on a Spanish end-of-year assessment to measure the students' language growth. The topic--los seres vivos (living things)--goes hand-in-hand with the science unit we've been working on. Ask your child to tell you what he/she knows about living and nonliving things!

Immersion Tip of the Week

I encourage you to look for opportunities to help your child keep up his/her Spanish over the summer! Here are some great ideas:

*Spanish Outdoor Adventure Camp with Maestra Pereira (at Holland Christian High School)

*Amigos Uno and Amigos Dos Camps with Maestra Zondervan (at Zeeland Christian)

*Would you be interested in meeting up with members of the class this summer for informal get-togethers? Please help me out by filling out the form here

Reading Tip of the Week

Since my mind is clearly on summer, did you read about the Summer Slide program? Did you also know that our SI kids will receive 50 paper books in Spanish?! For less than 50 cents per book (the cost is $15), your child will be equipped with GREAT summer reading material at his/her level IN SPANISH! I strongly encourage every parent to sign their child up for this wonderful opportunity to prevent your child from losing the Spanish reading skills s/he has learned this year. Deadline to RSVP is May 15th. Email me or Miska Rynsburger (mrynsburger@hollandchristian.org).

Upcoming Dates to Remember

*Saturday, May 4th: LAUP Fiesta! From 11am-5pm, at the Shops at Westshore (by Hobby Lobby and Burlington). Come visit our Holland Christian Spanish Immersion table and see some of our classmates perform traditional baile folklórico at 4pm.

*Wednesday, May 8th: SI Chapel at 8:30 (note time change!). Come sing and worship with us as we share a message with the school! ALSO, we will leave for a short field trip to Bill's Greenhouse immediately after the Chapel service! (Note that May 8th is also a half day: Dismissal at 11:30am!)

*Thursday, May 9th: Half Day; Dismissal at 11:30am and NO BUSSING SERVICES.

*Wednesday, May 22nd: Field Trip to Boulder Ridge Wild Animal Park. We have space for 2 paid chaperones to come along. If you are interested in chaperoning, please email me ASAP--I can only take 2 and it will be on a first-come, first-serve basis.

All right, I think that's it! Have a wonderful weekend, and ¡hasta la próxima semana!
