14 - 18 de febrero

 ¡Hola Familias!

It's been another great week in our classroom! We've been up to a lot--here are some details:

Reading / Lectura: This week we practiced syllables with R: ra, re, ri, ro, ru. Every week the kids show more confidence with reading, writing, and producing vocabulary with our syllables! We've also been working on verb conjugations with él (he), ella (she) and usted (formal "you") forms. Finally, we are adding to our reading strategy toolbox by practicing reading books multiple times and using expression as we read.

Writing / Escritura: We have been working on writing 3-part stories with principio, medio, y final (beginning, middle, and end). We have been revising our work and adding details to show emotions with pictures and words.

Math / Matemáticas: This week we continued to work on telling and solving number stories. We are also working on identifying the parts of 10, which will be our area of focus over the next unit. One tip I give the kids is to use their fingers: for example, if they put 2 fingers down, how many fingers do they have up?

Bible / Biblia: We finished learning about el rey David and started learning about el rey Salomón this week. We learned how he asked God for sabiduría instead of money or material possessions and how God rewarded him with all of these things. Then, we learned about how Salomón built el templo for the Israelites to worship God. We had fun using our imaginations to
construct our own templos!

Science / Ciencias: We started a new unit this week called Mi Tierra, or My Earth. We explored the differences between a map and a globe and learned how the earth is made up of more agua than tierra.

Social Studies / Estudios Sociales: For Black History Month, we learned a little bit about a few African American inventors who invented things we use every day, such as the ice cream scoop, the 3-colored traffic light, and the mailbox!

Immersion Tip of the Week

Your child may be starting to decode words using Spanish pronunciation, even if the words are in English! This can be fun to listen to, but don't worry about "fixing" your child's pronunciation. You can simply say, "Wow! That's exactly how you'd say it in Spanish! In English we say the sounds like this: ____". Your child will start to unconsciously separate English from Spanish as you continue to read at home and as he/she continues to grow in reading skills.

Reading Tip of the Week

Speaking of reading, make sure you are reading every day at home! If you do not have a regular "reading routine" (e.g. before bedtime, right after school, etc.), make it a point to establish one--and stick to it! Life can get hectic, but I have to say, as a parent I really enjoy slowing down every evening to read with my kids.

Coming Up...

-Monday, February 21st: No school (winter break/staff PD)

-Monday, March 7th: Field Trip to Grand Rapids Children's Museum (please plan to pack a home lunch that day)

-Monday, March 28th and Wednesday, March 30th: Parent/Teacher Conferences (let me know if you did not receive an email to sign up for one!)

-March 1-10: Spring break

Have a great long weekend, familias! See you next Tuesday!
