14-18 de marzo

¡Hola Familias!

Man, it sure felt like spring arrived this week! Kids have been so excited to shed their layers and engage in more outdoor play, and it is refreshing to feel the warm sun again. So thankful for another week together of learning!

Here is a glimpse of what we've been up to this week...

Reading / Lectura: This week we studied the syllables of a silent letter in Spanish, the letter H: ha, he, hi, ho, hu. We have also been learning about the Spanish verb estar, which can refer to what someone is doing in the present moment (also known as the present continuous form). Finally, we have been reading nonfiction books and talking about how we can learn from the pictures and the words.

Writing / Escritura: We continued our "how-to", or instructivo, unit this week by making chocolate caliente on Monday and writing about the process. We also had the exciting opportunity to make tortillas de maseca (a type of corn flour) with my friends from Mexico, Andrea and Nancy. It has been so fun to have them visit the classroom and work with the kids on a regular basis!

Math / Matemáticas: We have been working on identifying the parts of 10, writing and counting from 1-100, comparing 2-D and 3-D shapes, and practicing our addition and subtraction problems.

Bible / Biblia: This week we learned the story of Daniel and how he stood up for what was right, even when he was the only one. The kids enjoyed writing and illustrating a book about the story of Daniel y los Leones!

Science / Ciencias
: We continued our study of Mi Tierra this week by reviewing the 3 types of earth: tierra (soil), arena (sand), and piedras (rocks). After examining each one in the classroom, it was fun for the kids to go on a hunt outside and find examples of each on our playground!

Easter Projects Coming Up!

I did not get many of these items this week, so here is the message again with a new date! We are going to start learning about the resurrection story pretty soon, and we will need a few items to do this together! Please send in the following items by Wednesday, March 23rd:

1. Two sticks, bound together with twine or string to form a cross. They should be about finger thickness and stand no more than about a foot tall. Please label the cross with a post-it or tag with your child's name!

2.  A dozen colored plastic eggs, labeled from 1-12, in an egg carton. Please label the carton with your child's name!

World Down Syndrome Day

...is Monday, March 21! Your child brought home a small handout today reminding him/her to wear mismatched socks on Monday to remember how people with Down syndrome have an extra copy of the 21st chromosome. We will do some other activities to celebrate our friends with Down syndrome on this special day!
