7-11 de marzo

¡Hola Familias!

We had an awesome week! Our field trip to the Grand Rapids Children's Museum on Monday was filled with lots of play and fun, and the rest of the week was busy as well! Here are some updates on what we've been doing...

Reading / Lectura: This week we studied the syllables with j (pronounced as a hard /h/ sound): ja, je, ji, jo, ju, as well as the hard g sound in ge, gi. We are also learning about the verb estar, which means "to be" and refers to feelings and location. Finally, we have been incorporating reading strategies as we explore how-to and other nonfiction texts.

Writing / Escritura: We started our "how-to", or instructivo, unit this week. We started off by making limonada together. This was a fun way to incorporate culture, as aguas frescas, or fresh "fruit waters", are very popular to make as well as buy in many Spanish-speaking countries. Later in the week, we made sándwiches de maní con mermelada, or peanut butter and jelly sandwiches--not super cultural, but of course very familiar! We used sequence adverbs primero, después, luego, y al final (first, next, then, last) to organize our writing.

Math / Matemáticas: This week we have been exploring the attributes of 2-D and 3-D shapes and comparing the two. The kids have been enjoying playing "la figura secreta" (the secret shape) and trying to guess what shape Maestra is thinking of. I just can't trick them! ;)

Bible / Biblia: We are almost through the Old Testament! This week we wrapped up our study of Eliseo (Elisha) and read the stories of Naamán,
Estér
and Josías, finishing the week with the familiar story of the fiery furnace and Sadrac, Mesac, y Abednego.

Science: This week we explored three components of earth: la tierra (soil), la arena (sand), and las piedras (rocks/pebbles). The kids really enjoyed studying and exploring each type of earth using magnifying glasses, and it was interesting to hear their observations as they compared each one.

Easter Projects Coming Up!

We are going to start learning about the resurrection story pretty soon, and we will need a few items to do this together! Please send in the following items by next Friday, March 18th:

1. Two sticks, bound together with twine or string to form a cross. They should be about finger thickness and stand no more than about a foot tall. Please label the cross with a post-it or tag with your child's name!

2.  A dozen colored plastic eggs, labeled from 1-12, in an egg carton. Please label the carton with your child's name!

Come check out the Maroon and White shop!!

Friday, March 25 the Maroon and White shop will be at Rose Park from 2-3:30! Come check out all the fantastic kid and adult HC merchandise. Your kids will look amazing and all proceeds will go to Holland Christian Unified Sports. We will accept cash, check or credit card for payment.
We are looking forward to seeing you then!!

School Supply Drive

I mentioned before that I will be traveling to Guadalajara, Mexico for Spring Break on a mission trip with my church. Help us "fill our suitcase" and support Corasón A.C., a school we will be visiting that serves low-income students! Your child brought home a flyer today with items needed for a school supply drive. Look for the suitcase in the front entrance of school. Items will be collected until Wednesday, March 30th. Thank you for your support!

Have a wonderful and restful weekend! Enjoy more photos from our week below.
