10-14 de octubre

¡Hola Familias!

We had a fantastic, busy week this week in Kindergarten! On Wednesday, we celebrated our friends with Down syndrome with a fun Hoedown, complete with line dancing! Today we enjoyed a wonderful field trip with our friends in the other Spanish Immersion classes at Wendt Park. We ate lunch together, engaged in some outdoor learning, and spent time praising God in His creation!

Here are some other things we've been up to...

Reading / Lectura: This week we finished the whole alphabet! We wrapped up with y, z, and then the digraphs ch, ll, and rr. We have also been working on "reading" books by looking at pictures and using the vocabulary that we already know.

Writing / Escritura: We are starting a new vocabulary unit on el cuerpo, or the body. We have been practicing drawing our bodies and adding rótulos, or labels, showing different parts. We did a fun activity with our 2nd grade friends where we drew and wrote together!

Math / Matemáticas: This week we have focused on the numbers 1-10: putting them in order, comparing them, and recognizing the numbers. We have also started some fun fall-themed centers!

Bible / Biblia: This week we finished the story of Jacob y Esaú. We learned how Jacob had to leave his family when he stole his brother's bendición, but how God was still with him. Then, we learned how Esaú forgave his brother when he returned--just like God forgives us when we return to Him!

Science / Ciencias: We are reviewing all of los cinco sentidos this week, noticing the beautiful colors of fall! We enjoyed painting some calabazas (pumpkins) all the colors of the arco iris (rainbow).

Immersion Tip of the Week

I am gradually starting to require more and more Spanish to be spoken in the classroom. Remind your child that he/she already has A LOT of vocabulary, even though sometimes he/she won't know the exact word to use. Ask your child how to describe an object in Spanish, using colors, shapes, numbers, and adjectives like big/small, hot/cold, hard/soft, fast/slow, etc. I think you will be impressed!

Reading Tip of the Week
When you read with your child, encourage your child to look for words, vowels, sounds, and/or syllables that he/she knows. As they begin learning to read, the students will become much more aware of print. Call their attention to features of the text in a fun, non-pressured way as you enjoy a book together.

Parent/Teacher Conferences

...are next Monday and Wednesday, October 17th and 19th. I look forward to sitting down and talking with each one of you about how your child is doing in kindergarten! If we are meeting in-person, please plan on arriving punctually so I can give you the full 15 minutes of our conference time. :)

No School: October 20-21

Just a reminder that we have no school next Thursday and Friday due to our CEA conference. Also, Wednesday will be a half day of school with conferences from 12-4. Enjoy the long weekend!

Lunch Duty Helper

I am still looking for lots of parent volunteers to have lunch with our wonderful class! I try to meet with my grade level team on Thursdays during the lunch half hour, and your help allows me to do this! Please take a look at the sign up here and sign up if you are able. ¡Gracias!

Grandparents' Day

We are super excited for Grandparents' Day coming up on Thursday, October 27th! We will be preparing some crafts/activities for our grandparents and grandfriends starting next week.
