17-19 de octubre

¡Hola Familias!

It was a short week this week, but we had a LOT going on! This week I thoroughly enjoyed getting to sit down with families and celebrate each child's growth. I am so proud of my students for all they have learned so far in Kindergarten!

Here is an update on what we've been doing this week:

Reading / Lectura: We have started getting ready for literacy centers! This week we learned how to use the Raz-Kids app on our iPads (I recommended this app to you at conferences), which will be one of our daily literacy activities. We also learned how to sort and choose our own books from the classroom library. We are also learning how we can read a familiar text several times to think about how the characters feel and what is happening in the story.

Writing / Escritura: This week we continued learning vocabulary for el cuerpo and worked on adding more words and labels to our work. We also learned how to add un punto (a period) at the end of the sentence.

Math / Matemáticas: In math we have been comparing shapes, sorting numbers from 1-10, counting to 20, and noticing patterns.

Bible / Biblia
: We started to learn the story of José (Joseph) and how he received un manto de muchos colores from his father Jacob. We also learned about Joseph's two sueños (dreams).

Science / Ciencias: Today we cut open a calabaza (pumpkin) and explored it using the five senses. It was fun for everyone!

Immersion Tip of the Week

Make sure you expose your child to a lot of rich vocabulary in English (and in Spanish, too, if you speak the language!). You can do this by reading, talking about what you see in books, describing pictures, talking about what you see in the supermarket--pretty much any activity you do! This will help your child continue to make connections between languages, as well as strengthen verbal skills.

Reading Tip of the Week

Your child has been bringing home books from the library--usually one in English and one in Spanish (or bilingual). If you don't speak Spanish, help your child look for words or syllables that he/she knows! Don't forget to look at the pictures and talk about what you think is happening in the story!

Body Safety Presentations

On Thursday, November 3rd, we will have some guests from the Children's Advocacy Center come to give a Body Safety presentation to the class. Please see the handout for more information. They did a great job last year on presenting such an important topic to our kids! Let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Matilda!

HCHS’s Theatre Department is proud to present Matilda for the Fall Musical this year! Based on the book by Roald Dahl, Matilda is the inspiring story of a girl with astonishing wit, intelligence, psychokinetic powers, and an extraordinary imagination who dreams of a better life. You won’t want to miss this incredibly fun musical. Performances are November 17-19 at 7 pm. Due to licensing restrictions we are unable to livestream this Fall’s production, but you can get your in-person tickets at hollandchristian.org/theatre beginning October 17th.

Picture Retake Day

If you missed our picture days in September, or would like another opportunity for pictures, save the date for Wednesday, October 26. If you had a picture taken in September, please bring in the pictures that were ordered on retake day. These will be given back to GPI.

Also: if you would like a YEARBOOK for your child, please be sure to order one now! Thank you!

Have a great long weekend!
