16-18 de octubre

 ¡Hola Familias!

It was a short week this week, but we had a LOT going on! I am so proud of my students for all they have learned so far in Kindergarten!

Here is an update on what we've been doing this week:

Reading / Lectura: We have started getting ready for literacy centers! This week we learned how to use the Raz-Kids app on our iPads (a paper went home with your child today about it), which will be one of our daily literacy activities. We also learned how to sort and choose our own books from the classroom library. We are also learning how we can read a familiar text several times to think about how the characters feel and what is happening in the story.

Writing / Escritura: This week we continued learning vocabulary for el cuerpo and worked on adding more words and labels to our work. The kids are doing a great job stretching out their words to write the sounds they hear!

Math / Matemáticas: In math we have been doing some fun fall-themed centers with lots of calabazas (pumpkins)!

Bible / Biblia: We continued learning about José this week. We learned how God was with José even when things went badly for him--when he was sold into slavery and taken to Egipto, when he was thrown in la carcel, and even when the cupbearer was freed but forgot about him.

Social Studies / Estudios Sociales: We learned about different animals and the ways that they communicate using the five senses.

Immersion Tip of the Week

Make sure you expose your child to a lot of rich vocabulary in English (and in Spanish, too, if you speak the language!). You can do this by reading, talking about what you see in books, describing pictures, talking about what you see in the supermarket--pretty much any activity you do! This will help your child continue to make connections between languages, as well as strengthen verbal skills.

Reading Tip of the Week

Your child has been bringing home books from the library--usually one in English and one in Spanish (or bilingual). If you don't speak Spanish, help your child look for words or syllables that he/she knows! Don't forget to look at the pictures and talk about what you think is happening in the story!

Picture Retake Day

If you missed our picture days in September, or would like another opportunity for pictures, save the date for Wednesday, October 25. If you had a picture taken in September, please bring in the pictures that were ordered on retake day. These will be given back to GPI.

That's all I have for now! Enjoy the long weekend, and I'll see your child back at school on Monday!
