2-6 de octubre

¡Hola familias!

¡Feliz viernes! Happy Friday! We had a great week in Kindergarten. Some of the highlights were celebrating el día de los abuelos yesterday, learning about our new October discipleship practice, Crear Belleza (Beauty Creating), planting sunflower seeds in our greenhouse, and painting pumpkins to celebrate el otoño!

Here is some more information about what we've been learning this week:

Reading / Lectura: This week we studied the letters X, Y, Z, and the digraph ch! We are also learning to distinguish sustantivos propios (proper nouns) from regular nouns. We've also continued to practice partner reading and taking turns talking with each other.

Writing / Escritura: We are wrapping up our unit writing about la familia! This week the kids worked on choosing their favorite piece of writing and evaluating it using a rubric. We have also been practicing sharing our work with others and celebrating our growth.

Math / Matemáticas: This week we explored some shapes, including círculos, cuadrados, y rectángulos. We also have been comparing numbers using the terms mayor (greater) and menor (less).

Bible / Biblia: We have been starting to learn about Abraham y Sarah and how God promised them that their family would be as numerous as las estrellas. We also learned about Jacob y Esaú and how Jacob stole la bendición (the blessing) from his brother. The kids enjoyed acting out this story!

Science / Ciencias: This week we continued exploring the five senses with la lengua (the tongue). We did some taste-testing to explore flavors that are dulce (sweet), salado (salty), agrio (sour), and amargo (bitter). We tried lots of things, including kale, pickles, chocolate chips, pretzels, lime slices, and even black coffee (a VERY tiny taste!)!

Immersion Tip of the Week

One of my favorite parts about teaching immersion is finding creative ways to incorporate language into our everyday activities. For example, when we're having lunch, I like to ask the kids to identify colores, formas (shapes), and other adjectives like caliente/frío (hot/cold), suave/duro (soft/hard), and dulce/salado (sweet/salty). The kids really enjoy showing me things they have for lunch that fall into different categories! Try this at home and ask your kids what words in Spanish they'd use to describe their food.

Reading Tip of the Week
When reading a book this week, see if your child can identify some letters. Practice the name of the letters (in English OR Español) and the sound that it makes. It's OK if the letter makes a different sound in English than in Spanish; just tell your child that some letters made different sounds in different languages. ;)

Hope Students in the Classroom

If your child has mentioned Maestro José, Maestra Melanie, or Maestra Yessi, they are Hope College students who have been helping in our classroom! All three students are native or heritage Spanish speakers, and this semester they have been coming to observe, learn, and do some teaching as part of a literacy course. We are excited to have them helping us!

Donations needed!

I am looking for a few items for our classroom! If any parent would like to donate large containers of hand sanitizer, or filling for bean bag chairs, please let me know! Thank you so much!

From Parent Board: The parent board would love for you to take a look at this link - Sign Up Genius

An Invitation: Rose Park Fall Festival! Take a peek here for the exciting details! Thank you to our parent team for helping us celebrate our beautiful new playscape and ranch! Please sign up for your family to attend!

Safety and Security - Holland Christian is implementing consistent security measures for all K-12 students. (Preschool will continue their drop off and pick up as previously notified). Now that school has been underway for six weeks, we are asking parent/student drop off and good-bye to take place at the front door. By October 9, we hope that all children will be able to navigate their way from the front door to their classroom. Teachers and staff will be readily available to support and cheer our independent students to their lockers and classrooms. This measure is important so that we do not have unknown or unexpected visitors accessing our buildings. This safety measure is consistent throughout all of our buildings. You’re still welcome inside as needed, please stop in at the office for a check in and name badge. Thank you for your understanding. If you have questions or concerns, please connect with Miska at mrynsburger@hollandchristian.org or Katelyn at kroskamp@hollandchristian.org

Photo retakes are October 25 - if your child will need retakes add that date to your calendar.

An Invitation:  HC Youth Youth Volleyball Night  Join us as we cheer on our HC Varsity volleyball team as they play against Coopersville.  Tuesday, October 17 at 6:00 PM in the HC High School gym.  Go Maroons!! (Child gets in free with paid adult or adult sports pass)

TRIP:  If you have friends or family who are interested in learning about TRIP, or if you have more detailed questions about the program, we will be having another informational meeting on October 12 at 6:30 in the HS Media Center.

Here are lots more pictures from our fun week!
