¡Hola Familias!
We have had a great week! I truly enjoyed sitting down with each family to celebrate the growth of all of my students. Thank you for being flexible and for making the time to do so! We had a great week of learning this week, with a highlight being our barn chores on Tuesday. I think that the kids would like to do barn chores every day! ;)
Here is more information about our week...
Reading / Lectura: This week we finished the whole alphabet! We wrapped up with the digraphs ll and rr, and then we started practicing different skills we will use when we begin with our literacy centers. We have also been working on "reading" books by looking at pictures and using the vocabulary that we already know.
Writing / Escritura: We are starting a new vocabulary unit on el cuerpo, or the body. We have been practicing drawing our bodies and adding rótulos, or labels, showing different parts. We did a fun activity drawing personas on white boards together!
Math / Matemáticas: This week we have focused on the numbers 1-10: putting them in order, comparing them, and recognizing the numbers. We also practiced comparing shapes like círculos, cuadrados, y rectángulos.
Bible / Biblia: We have started learning about José, or Joseph. We learned about how José received a special gift from his father Jacob and how he had dreams that made his brothers jealous--celosos. We are learning how God had a plan for José even through difficult times, like when his brothers sold him into slavery.
Social Studies / Estudios Sociales: We learned about mi barrio (my neighborhood), the places we can go there, and the ways we can get around.
Immersion Tip of the Week
I am gradually starting to require more and more Spanish to be spoken in the classroom. Remind your child that he/she already has A LOT of vocabulary, even though sometimes he/she won't know the exact word to use. Ask your child how to describe an object in Spanish, using colors, shapes, numbers, and adjectives like big/small, hot/cold, hard/soft, fast/slow, etc. I think you will be impressed!
Reading Tip of the Week
When you read with your child, encourage your child to look for words, vowels, sounds, and/or syllables that he/she knows. As they begin learning to read, the students will become much more aware of print. Call their attention to features of the text in a fun, non-pressured way as you enjoy a book together.
