18-20 de octubre

¡Hola Familias!

In spite of the short week we had, we got A LOT of learning accomplished! We also had a lot of fun playing outside, celebrating our friends with Down syndrome at our special Hoedown today, and learning new center activities together!

It was also such a blessing to be able to sit down and talk with you about how your child has been doing in kindergarten! Thank you for your time and for your kind words of encouragement. :)

Here is an update on our week...

Reading / Lectura: We spent this week learning and practicing some activities and centers that we will use when we start guided reading. We learned how to organize and choose books from our classroom library, how to use a few reading apps on our iPads, and how to write words with stamps and with magnets.

Writing / Escritura: This week we have been practicing more el cuerpo vocabulary as we revise and edit our work. We've been working hard to add spaces between words and puntos (periods) at the end of a sentence.

Math / Matemáticas: We took our first unit "test" and have been working on identifying numbers, seeing 5-groups in numbers, writing from 1-10, and differentiating between sumas y restas (addition and subtraction).

Bible / Biblia: We are learning about José, or Joseph, and how he was Jacob's favorite son. He received a manto de mucho colores that made his brothers jealous. We learned how his brothers sold him to be un esclavo in Egipto. Despite these moments of trouble, we learned how God was always with José even when he felt alone and lost. Our God is good!

Science / Ciencias: We wrapped up the fifth sense this week--los oídos para escuchar (ears for hearing). We made some cute palos de lluvia, or rain sticks, which are originally from Chile! (P.S. Sorry for the mess these probably made in your house! ;) )

Immersion Tip of the Week

Make sure you expose your child to a lot of rich vocabulary in English (and in Spanish, too, if you speak the language!). You can do this by reading, talking about what you see in books, describing pictures, talking about what you see in the supermarket--pretty much any activity you do! This will help your child continue to make connections between languages, as well as strengthen verbal skills.

Reading Tip of the Week

Your child recently brought home books from the library--one in English and one in Spanish (or bilingual). If you don't speak Spanish, help your child look for words or syllables that he/she knows! Don't forget to look at the pictures and talk about what you think is happening in the story!

Library helpers

We are so blessed to have a wonderful Library and Media Center at our school, with a growing section en español that the kids can enjoy. However, our wonderful librarian, Mrs. Mary Hofman, works at three different schools and isn't able to keep up with all of the reshelving that has to take place when we return our books! Is anyone willing to volunteer a bit of time, perhaps a couple hours a week, either once or on a regular schedule, to help with this very important task? Please contact me or Mary directly at mhofman@hollandchristian.org if you are interested! (I believe I had someone contact me weeks ago about wanting to do this, but I misplaced who it was--if it was you, please let me know!!) Muchas gracias!

Next Wednesday & Thursday

Just a heads-up: next Wednesday, 10/27, I will be at an all-day training for PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions & Supports). Maestra Abi Rodriguez will be our guest teacher that day. On Thursday, 10/28, I have our quarterly K collaboration meeting first thing and will return to the classroom at 10am.

Enjoy the pictures below and have a wonderful long weekend!
