4-8 de octubre

 ¡Hola Familias!

We are closing out another fantastic week! I am so proud of the kids as they get more and more used to our routines, demonstrate positive behavior, and use more and more Spanish in the classroom!

Here is an update on our week...

Reading / Lectura: We are coming to the end of our alphabet study! This week we practiced the letters T, U, V, W, and X. After we finish the alphabet, we will start studying another foundational element in Spanish reading--las sílabas (syllables). We have also been working to distinguish singular and plural nouns, as well as read with a partner and on our own. We finished off the week celebrating our progress with our 2nd and 3rd grade buddies from Maestra Cantu's class!

Writing / Escritura: This week we finished our first unit on la familia. We worked on evaluating our work using a rubric and presenting it to the class. I will show you your child's work during our parent/teacher conferences, which are coming up soon!

Math / Matemáticas: We have been comparing numbers using fichas (counting chips), putting numbers in order from 1-10, practicing our penmanship for numbers 1-3 again, and counting by 1s and 10s. We are also enjoying some fun and exciting centers with calabazas, where we get to make a pumpkin face, write addition equations, and weigh and measure some
pumpkins!

Bible / Biblia: This week we learned more about Abraham y Sara, who listened to God's voice when he directed them to go to a new land. We talked about God's faithfulness to Abraham by providing him a son, Isaac, in his old age. Then, we acted out the story of Jacob y Esaú and how Jacob ended up getting la bendición (the blessing) instead of his brother. I suggest that you read this story at home to help your child make connections between the story in English and Spanish!

Science / Ciencias: This week in science, we explored the sense of taste--la lengua para saborear. We did a fun taste test to notice the differences between dulce, salado, agrio, y amargo (sweet, salty, sour, and bitter). The kids enjoyed trying some foods--like pickles, marshmallows, and crackers--and then had some differing opinions with others! ;) Some of my favorite reactions to watch were when the kids tried kale, fresh cranberries, and black coffee (a VERY small sample!)!

Immersion Tip of the Week

One of my favorite parts about teaching immersion is finding creative ways to incorporate language into our everyday activities. For example, when we're having lunch, I like to ask the kids to identify colores, formas (shapes), and other adjectives like caliente/frío (hot/cold), suave/duro (soft/hard), and dulce/salado (sweet/salty). The kids really enjoy showing me things they have for lunch that fall into different categories! Try this at home and ask your kids what words in Spanish they'd use to describe their food.

Reading Tip of the Week
When reading a book this week, see if your child can identify some letters. Practice the name of the letters (in English OR Español) and the sound that it makes. It's OK if the letter makes a different sound in English than in Spanish; just tell your child that some letters made different sounds in different languages. ;)

Parent Volunteers

It is such a blessing to be able to receive more parent helpers in the classroom and on field trips this year! If you would like to participate as a parent volunteer in some capacity, please make sure you have filled out this form, as I will check it first to see who is available. Also, parent volunteers will also have to fill out an iChat form and provide a copy of their driver's license to the front office. Please plan to do that if and when you will be accompanying us on field trips and/or in the classroom.

Parent/Teacher Conferences

I am so looking forward to the opportunity to meet with all of you and discuss how your child is doing this year in Kindergarten! Please make sure you have signed up for a conference time on either Monday, October 18th or Tuesday, October 19th. If you have not done so and aren't sure how, please let me know and I will assist you.

CEA: No School

We will have no school on Thursday, October 21st and Friday, October 22nd so that staff can attend the CEA conference for Christian Educators.

From the office:

Our supportive parent team has put together a sign up genius to help fuel our hard working teachers and keep them energized for conferences. Please consider joining in the "feed our teachers" effort HERE.

Art Room Needs

Mrs Luce is in need of a few items for our art room.  Do you have these in the nooks and crannies of your house?
  • unused beads
  • clean parmesan cheese containers
  • unused yarn
  • clean yogurt containers

Hope that you enjoy your weekend! Here are some more pictures from our full and busy week...
