27 de septiembre - 1 de octubre

 ¡Hola Familias!

What a beautiful week! We had the opportunity to get some outdoor learning in this week, not only at Post Family Farms, but also for a bit of science, Bible, and to learn about Sukkot during our chapel service. We are so thankful for another wonderful week of kindergarten and the opportunity to learn, grow, and play together!

Here are some details about what we have been learning...

Reading / Lectura: We are getting close to the end of the alphabet! This week we practiced letters O, P, Q, R, and S in Spanish. I am working with the kids every day to review letter names and sounds (see video for reference) and will soon complete an assessment to start grouping for guided reading centers. So exciting! We are also working on singular vs. plural nouns (sustantivos--ask your child to sing you that song!), as well as building reading stamina both individually and with a partner.

Writing / Escritura: We continue to use La Familia as a reference point in our writing, but this week I have started pushing kids to explore how to s-t-r-e-t-c-h words to hear their individual sounds. They are referring to our sound chart that we use every day to find and write each sound. I am so proud of them as they make this huge step in their independent writing!

Math / Matemáticas: This week we have started using fichas para contar (counting chips) to represent numbers and see the different parts within a number; for example, 4 can be represented by 2 and 2, by 4 and 0, or by 3 and 1. We have also been exploring some new math centers.

Bible / Biblia: We finished learning about Noé (Noah) this week and started talking a little bit about Abram, who listened to God's voice and traveled with his family to a new land.

Immersion Tip of the Week

You'll notice that some of Spanish reading instruction looks a little different from English reading instruction--for example, Spanish reading relies heavily on syllable blending. Even though some of the phonics and strategies are different from English, many strategies--such as comprehension of text and using picture clues--are the same and will transfer to English.

Reading Tip of the Week

Let's keep it simple this week--just READ together! Don't underestimate the power of reading with your child! If you have not already, incorporate reading books into your daily routine. Apart from its academic benefits, it is a wonderful opportunity to slow down and bond with your child!

Baby Pictures

We are going to read a book about babies in the next few weeks, and I always like to have the kids guess whose baby picture is whose (they LOVE it!). Would you please send me a baby picture of your child? It can be either via email or a physical picture; whatever is fine. (I will cut it and put on a bulletin board, so please send me one you don't need back!) Thank you!!

Calabazas!

Fall is here! During the fall season, I like to set up some math centers with calabazas, or pumpkins, that can be used for different activities. Are you going to the Farmer's Market this weekend or somewhere with calabazas? If so, I would love it if you'd like to donate some mini pumpkins to the classroom! Any size or shape is fine. I'd love to do a pumpkin painting activity if we have someone willing to donate white mini pumpkins to our classroom as well. ¡Muchas gracias!

That's all for this week! Have a wonderful weekend and enjoy the beautiful fall weather! Here are some more pictures from our week:
