We had another great week! This week we enjoyed Sing, Move, and Memorize with the rest of the school, focusing on verses from Acts 2. It is amazing to think that the same power of the Holy Spirit that allowed the disciples to speak other languages lives within us! We are grateful to God for the many blessings he has given us, including being able to learn more about him here at school.
Here's more information about our week...
Reading / Lectura: This week we learned the syllables with g: ga, gue, gui, go, gu (all of which make a /g/ sound as in "guitar"). We've also been learning about nonfiction books and distinguishing between hechos y opiniones (fact and opinions).
Writing / Escritura: This week we started writing nonfiction books about things we know a lot about. The kids brainstormed topics, picked one, and started planning their writing, listing facts about their topic. We will continue working on this book next week.
Math / Matemáticas: This week we worked on solving word problems, identifying addition and subtraction problems, and matching expressions with pictures.
Bible / Biblia: We've been wrapping up our study of the Old Testament this week. We learned about Daniel y los Leones, talking about how we should always obey God first over everything else. We can be brave like Daniel too, by sharing our faith with others!
Science / Social Studies: This week we continued the study of My Earth/Mi Tierra. We examined different types of earth (soil, sand, and pebbles), planted bean seeds, and made predictions about how our seeds will grow in different conditions. We also celebrated El Día de la Tierra on Wednesday, and did a nature scavenger hunt on Thursday with our 3rd grade buddies!
Reading Tip of the Week
Establish a "family reading time" at the end of the day to wind down, spend time together, and read. Is there a series that you can get into as a family? Some of my kids' favorite series have been Magic Tree House, Hombre Perro (Dog Man), A-Z Mysteries, Berenstain Bears (I know, very old school!), and the Mo Willems books.
Immersion Tip of the Week
Look for opportunities for your child to use Spanish in the community! There are lots of Hispanic grocery stores, bakeries, and restaurants in this area. Let me know if you would like a recommendation! We're also excited for our field trip to Taquería Azteca that's coming up soon!
Field Trip to Benjamin's Hope
Next week on Tuesday morning, we will be traveling to Benjamin's Hope! This amazing facility is a place where adults of all abilities can thrive, learn about God's love for them, and participate in daily life together. One of the activities we will engage in will be participating in their daily devotional/worship service. This might look different than what we are used to, but it is a way to see how God made us all in his image and how we can worship him in many ways. We'll be talking a little more about our field trip on Monday, but you may also want to talk with your child sometime this weekend to prepare for this special experience.
It's getting close to the end of the year--can you believe it? Please make every effort to return any library books your child may still have at home! We will still have a couple of weeks left to check out books, but let's make sure they all get returned promptly. Thank you!
