27-30 de enero

¡Hola Familias!

Despite lots of sickness going around, we had a great week! We had special, fun activities almost every day. Here are some of the highlights:

-On Tuesday, we enjoyed going to see the Grand Rapids Symphony Lollipops concert perform "Peter and the Wolf", and we read Pedro y el Lobo in class and wrote about our favorite parts.

-We met with some high school immersion students, read books together, and drew and wrote about the beginning, middle, and end of the book. It was so fun to see older kids who also speak español!

-We celebrated reaching our Spanish language goal by bringing our peluches (stuffed animals) to school on Thursday. We told our classmates about them, and we sang, danced, read, and wrote together!

-Today was el centésimo día de la escuela--the 100th day of school! We did lots of "100s" things together--we read 100 words, wrote in a 100 book, counted and wrote numbers from 1-100, and made a 100-piece snack mix! We also reflected on how much we've learned in these 100 days of school! ¡Qué divertido!

-In Biblia, we've been practicing retelling some stories together. In addition to learning stories about Eliseo (Elishah) and Naamán, we also enjoyed using some new felt Bible characters to remember the stories we've already studied.

Immersion Tip of the Week

Your child has grown SO much in his/her language development this year! Take a moment to encourage your child. There is (always) so much more to learn, but SO much to celebrate!

Reading Tip of the Week

Have you been reading the books in your child's book bags? Take a few out each day and have your child read them. (You are welcome to keep the books at home; they're starting to take up lots of space in their folders!)

Announcements / Upcoming Dates to Remember

*Thursday, February 7th: Cultural Field Trip to Taquería Azteca. We'll leave school at 9:15 and arrive back around 10:45 or 11:00. I am still missing some green slips--please turn them in on Monday!

*Thursday, February 13thCelebración del día del amor y la amistad (aka el día de San Valentín). We will do some special Valentine's Day activities. Your child is welcome to bring valentines to exchange with his/her classmates. You may help your child write our classmates' names if he/she is able to read them. If not, feel free to just write "De/From: (your child's name)".

*Friday, February 14th-Monday, February 17th: No School--Winter Break

Look! A Book!

Do you have any picture books for children on your shelves at home that are waiting to be enjoyed once again by eager readers? Any books that your family has outgrown over the years? Certainly many books grow to become family treasures to be saved for the next generation. However, our kindergarteners are wondering if you have any books on your shelves at home that you might not mind contributing to their brand new, community-oriented reading program called "Look! A Book!" On the last week of school, all kindergarteners from Holland Christian will board buses together and travel throughout our city hiding books carefully tucked into zip lock gallon bags throughout our city parks and play areas. A congratulatory note will be tucked in the bag celebrating the new book with the finder with instructions to read and enjoy the book. The eager new readers next step will be to hide the bagged book, once enjoyed, in a new location for the next reader. The note will be signed off with a salutation: "Happy Reading, HC Kindergarten Readers". If you can find a book or two to contribute, please send the books to our kindergarten classes. Rest assured, they will be put to good use, we hope, by many families in Holland over the summer months.
